Batch Relay

Third-party comparison · verified August 20, 2026

GotPhoto vs PhotoDay

Both platforms solve the same problem: match picture-day photos to kids, sell them to parents online, and hand paid orders to a lab. They disagree about nearly everything else.

Who wrote this: Batch Relay publishes this page and serves some of the same studios. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or integrated with either platform. Every claim comes from the vendors' public documentation, linked at the bottom, and was checked on August 20, 2026.

PhotoDay is strongest when

You want simple and first-party.

  • One flat 10% fee on the order subtotal. No subscription tier to pick, no plan to outgrow.
  • First-party facial recognition. FaceFind runs inside PhotoDay's own Capture app, so face data never routes through a second vendor.
  • Unlimited storage on every account.
  • AdvancePay credits let parents commit money before picture day without locking them into packages they have not seen.
  • Automated text-message campaigns are included for everyone, not gated behind a paid plan.

GotPhoto is strongest when

You want options and control.

  • Lab choice: 32 integrated North American labs against PhotoDay's 6, plus self-fulfillment and a Darkroom workflow on higher plans.
  • Every picture-day tagging method photographers already use: QR codes, barcodes, tethering, tap-to-tag lists, and manual tagging.
  • Operational controls PhotoDay lacks: hold-and-revise before production, minimum order values, custom domains, and multiple storefront languages.
  • Lower per-order fees at volume. Pro's 7% beats PhotoDay's 10% once sales cover the subscription.
  • Published regional DPAs and an explicit controller/processor model, which school contracts increasingly ask about.

The fee math, roughly

Cheaper depends on your volume.

PhotoDay takes 10% of the order subtotal with no subscription. GotPhoto Growth costs $99/year and takes 9%; Pro costs $499/year and takes 7%. Set aside the difference in fee basis for a moment and the crossover points are easy to place.

Under ~$9,900/yr

PhotoDay

The flat 10% with no subscription costs less than any GotPhoto paid plan at this volume.

Above ~$9,900/yr

GotPhoto Growth

9% plus $99/year starts beating the flat 10% here.

Above ~$16,600/yr

GotPhoto Pro

7% plus $499/year pulls ahead, and the gap widens with volume.

The caveat: the bases differ. PhotoDay calculates on the subtotal before sales tax and shipping, while GotPhoto's FAQ describes its fee against gross online sales. Lab billing also differs, since PhotoDay deducts lab costs from each order while GotPhoto's lab partners invoice separately. Run your own numbers before treating the crossover as exact.

Feature by feature

Only where they split.

Both platforms cover the basics: mobile storefronts, packages, digital downloads, email campaigns, price lists, PSPA exports, retouching, and coupons. Those ties are left off so the table stays about the decision. A check does not mean free; plan, partner, and lab caveats are noted where the docs made them clear.

Pricing and fees

The models are different enough that a percentage alone misleads. PhotoDay charges one rate on the order subtotal. GotPhoto charges a lower rate at higher plan tiers, on gross online sales.

Labs and fulfillment

This is the widest gap on the page. GotPhoto integrates about five times as many North American labs and supports self-fulfillment. PhotoDay curates a shorter list and folds lab payment into the order.

Picture day and subject matching

Different philosophies. PhotoDay built face matching into its own capture app and skips QR cards entirely. GotPhoto supports nearly every tagging method photographers already use, but its facial recognition runs through a second company.

PhotoDay bets on credits: parents buy AdvancePay credit before picture day and pick products after they see the photos. GotPhoto keeps traditional prepay alive and gives the shop itself more knobs.

Worth slowing down on if you shoot schools. Both platforms put consent duties on the studio. The differences are who processes the face data, what the retention documents say, and what paperwork exists.

Read this part twice

Before you turn on facial recognition.

Most feature gaps on this page are recoverable. Pick wrong and you lose some time. The biometric details involve children's face data and obligations that stay with the studio.

PhotoDay's retention language contradicts itself

As of this review, PhotoDay's privacy policy says biometric data is deleted on request, on job or account deletion, or one year after collection. Its FaceFind FAQ instead says three years of account inactivity. Both documents are current. If you shoot schools, ask PhotoDay which one controls and get the answer in writing.

GotPhoto's facial recognition adds a second company

Reference photos and event images route through SpotMyPhotos before matched results come back to GotPhoto. That means two sets of terms, two privacy policies, and two deletion processes to review, not one. SpotMyPhotos states it deletes facial parameters on request or within one year, whichever comes first.

Both put consent on you

Neither platform obtains consent for you. The studio (or the school, depending on the contract) is responsible for lawful collection before any biometric processing happens, and most of the subjects are minors. This page is product research, not legal advice; requirements vary by state and by contract.

Methodology and disclosure

How this page was prepared.

This comparison counts features documented on official vendor websites, help centers, pricing pages, privacy policies, terms, and trust pages as of August 20, 2026. It covers PhotoDay's U.S. offering and GotPhoto North America. Public documentation lags in-product changes, so "not found" means no comparable feature appeared in current public docs, not proof a vendor cannot enable something privately.

Batch Relay is an all-in-one photography commerce platform with storefronts, checkout, and print fulfillment, so we compete for some of the same customers these platforms serve. We kept the scoring to what the vendors publish and marked every caveat we found. Pricing and legal terms change often; verify against the linked sources before deciding.
